Purpose and Goals

The purpose of the Internet Point of Care CME is to provide structured, self-directed, online learning for physicians on topics relevant to their clinical practice. The specific objectives are to (1) identify practice-based knowledge needs; (2) complete extensive background research on a clinical question; (3) reinforce clinical decisions through review of published evidence; (4) learn new information related to clinical practice; (5) translate knowledge into professional practice; and (6) improve patient care by utilizing current published evidence.

Expected Results

The physician should be able to select and use appropriate professional, unbiased, peer-reviewed literature to answer self-identified clinical questions, to reinforce clinical decisions, to learn new information related to his or her clinical practice and to translate that knowledge into improved patient care.

Needs Assessment

The clinical questions will be self-identified knowledge needs. They may be based on (1) a rare condition; (2) a condition not managed recently by the physician; (3) a diagnostic dilemma; (4) a need for new clinical information; or (5) a controversial clinical issue.

Target Audience

The target audience for this activity will be all Affinity Health System physicians with Internet access.

Teaching Methods

The teaching method will consist of self-directed learning of a self-identified clinical question through use of evidence-based medical databases that are accessible through the hospital medical library web site. The physician will identify and consult relevant sources and describe the application of his findings to practice.

Databases to be Utilized

The following databases will be used: ACP Medicine, MDConsult, FirstConsult, Medline or PubMed, Medscape Reference (formerly eMedicine), Evidence-Based Practice Reviews (including Cochrane), National Cancer Institute, Medscape, National Guideline Clearing House, Clinical Pharmacology Drug Info, Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, UpToDate, and/or Book or Journal references.

Standards of Commercial Support and Disclosure

Databases have been chosen to ensure independence, lack of commercial bias and valid content. The planners of this activity have no financial affiliations relevant to the content. Commercial grants will not be solicited for this activity.
